1968 Ford Lotus Cortina Endurance Rally Car NOW SOLD
SOLD
First registered in August 1968, this great car is an Endurance Rally Specification example of a MKII Series 1 Ford Lotus Cortina.

Purchased in 2008 with Endurance Rallying in mind the car has been Professionally Built into a competitive rally car and has been designed to resemble the Lotus Cortina driven by Roger Clark on the 1968 London to Sydney rally. It boasts a full rebuild in 2009, new wiring loom, bull bar, foot plates at the rear end and the Vinyl livery has all been painstakingly reproduced in the same style and format as the car that it has been built to emulate.
The car has been engineered to cover rough ground at high speed for extended periods of time. The rear suspension now carries an additional leaf-spring each side (six in total) along with Bilstein dampers to support the bespoke 100-litre endurance fuel tank. The boot floor has also been modified to carry two spare road wheels and all the spares and tools required for any event. The front suspension also uses Bilstein dampers and is set in a gravel format; the front ride height has been raised by three inches. This combined with snow/mud tyres gives fantastic clearance and control. The car is currently on Dunlop Competition Tarmac tyres fitted to Motorsport Alloy road wheels. Competition Brake linings are fitted.
Inside the car, there is a full roll-cage, full harness seat belts, competition seats, fire extinguisher, trip meter and other MSA/FIA safety equipment.
The engine was re-built by Vulcan Engineering and develops 145bhp and runs a Mexico bottom-end. More horse-power was available at build but performance was aimed at a balance between outright power and reliability for the nature of the events the car was doing.
The gearbox is a Ford Type 9 unit giving the car a huge amount of driveability on Motorways. With the new gearing, top speed is around 110mph.
So far the major events the car has competed in:
The 2009 Nile Rally, a 3,600 mile event from Tunis to El Gouna, Egypt running in 2nd place from 41 cars for most of the event on its first outing.
The second event for the car was in 2009, the 4,000 mile London to Casablanca Rally, finishing 1st in class and 9th overall from a field of 50 competitors, including many larger engined and modern rally cars.
The Cortina also has given a demonstration drive at the Chatsworth House Rally Show and also at Lotus HQ in Hethel where it won the “Tony Mason” car of the show award at the annual Lotus Cortina meet.
